Surah An-Naba (78:1–40) – Qur'an-Only Explanation

Core message: People argue about the “Great News” (the Hereafter and Judgment), but Allah points to daily evidence: earth, mountains, sleep, night/day rhythm, heavens, sun, rain, vegetation. Verses 78:1–5

78:1About what are they inquiring?

78:2About the great news,

78:3That over which they are in disagreement.

78:4Nay, they shall soon know.

Explanation

The Surah opens by exposing the argument itself: people debate the “Great News” (Resurrection, Judgment, final outcome).
Allah does not treat this as an academic disagreement; He declares it will become certainty for them soon—either by death or by the Day itself.
The repetition (78:4–5) is emphasis: their denial does not change reality; it only delays their realization.

Call-out (leaders who sell certainty without proof): This Surah treats the Hereafter as “Great News” that becomes undeniable. If a sheikh/imam shifts people’s attention from Judgment to stories, personalities, and “special access,” he is distracting from the very news Allah says you will soon know.

Verses 78:6–16

Creation as evidence: earth, mountains, pairs, sleep, night/day, heavens, sun, rain, growth

78:6Have We not made the earth a resting place,

78:7And the mountains as stakes?

78:8And We have created you as pairs,

78:9And We have made your sleep (a means) for rest,

78:10And We have made the night as a covering,

78:11And We have made the day for livelihood,

78:12And We have built above you seven strong (heavens),

78:13And We have made a bright, blazing lamp,

78:14And We have sent down from the rain clouds abundant water,

78:15That We may produce thereby grain and vegetation,

78:16And gardens of thick growth.

Explanation

Allah argues using what no one can deny: the world is engineered for life—resting earth, stabilizing mountains, balanced human creation.
P “Pairs” (78:8) points to complementarity and continuation of life—Allah designed human society and reproduction; it is not self-made.
Sleep and the night/day system are mercy and discipline: you are given cycles—rest, cover, and work—so you can function.
The heavens, the sun as a blazing lamp, and rain that produces food and gardens are direct proofs of provision and power.
The logic is: if Allah can create and sustain this system, raising you again for Judgment is not “impossible”—denial is pride, not reason.

Call-out (religion built on personalities): Notice the Surah’s proof method: Allah points you to reality—creation, provision, mercy—then to accountability. If a sheikh/imam makes religion depend on his “status,” dreams, secret chains, or extra texts, he is moving people away from Qur’anic evidence to human dependence.

Verses 78:17–20

Day of Decision appointed; Trumpet; multitudes; sky opened; mountains become mirage

78:17Indeed, the Day of Decision is an appointed time.

78:18The day when the Trumpet is blown, and you shall come forth in multitudes.

78:19And the heaven will be opened, so will be as gates.

78:20And the mountains are moved, so will be as a mirage.

Explanation

This is not “maybe.” The Day is appointed—set by Allah, not by human expectation or denial (78:17).
The Trumpet indicates a public, mass resurrection—no secret salvation for an elite; everyone comes in multitudes (78:18).
The sky and mountains—symbols of permanence—are transformed. The Surah attacks the illusion that this world’s stability is eternal.

Call-out (elite-salvation culture): 78:18 says people come forth “in multitudes.” Any imam/sheikh who implies a private “VIP route” in the Hereafter for followers of his order is contradicting the Surah’s universal scene: all are raised, all face the appointed Day.

Verses 78:21–30

Hell as ambush; rebels; long ages; no cooling drink; recompense; denial of verses; record; increasing torment

78:21Indeed, Hell is a place of ambush,

78:22For the rebellious, a dwelling place.

78:23They shall remain lodged therein for ages.

78:24They shall not taste therein any coolness, nor drink,

78:25Except boiling water and the discharge from wounds,

78:26An appropriate recompense.

78:27Indeed, they were not expecting any reckoning,

78:28And they had denied Our verses as utterly false.

78:29And all things have We recorded in a Book.

78:30So taste, for We shall never increase you except in torment.

Explanation

Hell is described as an “ambush”: the rebels lived as if consequence would never catch them—then it catches them.
The target group is not “people who made small mistakes,” but the “rebellious” (those who knowingly resist truth and persist in denial and corruption).
The punishment imagery emphasizes humiliation and loss of comfort—exactly what worldly arrogance relied on.
Verses 78:27–28 give the moral diagnosis: they did not expect accountability, and they denied Allah’s verses.
78:29 destroys the “nothing is recorded” fantasy—everything is documented with Allah.
78:30 closes the door on bargaining: for hardened rebels who persist in denial, the response is increasing torment, not negotiation.

Direct call-out (intercession used to cancel accountability): 78:27–30 is exactly against the culture of “don’t worry, someone will save you.” The rebels denied the verses and expected no reckoning—then they meet a record and a final sentence. Any sheikh/imam who trains people to feel safe while ignoring Allah’s warnings is feeding the same mindset this Surah condemns.

Verses 78:31–37

Success for the righteous; gardens; purity; no idle speech; reward; Lordship; no one has power to speak before Him

78:31Indeed, for the righteous (there is) an abode of success,

78:32Gardens and grapevines,

78:33And companions of equal age,

78:34And a full cup.

78:35They shall not hear therein idle talk, nor falsehood.

78:36A reward from your Lord, a generous gift (due by) account,

78:37Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them, the Beneficent—none can have the power before Him to speak.

Explanation

In contrast to rebels, the righteous receive “success”—not merely pleasure, but safety and honor with Allah.
The imagery of gardens, drink, and companionship indicates abundance without fear.
78:35 highlights moral cleanliness: no idle talk, no lies—Paradise is not polluted like worldly gatherings.
78:36 emphasizes that reward is “by account”—meaning Allah’s justice and precision; not chaos, not favoritism.
78:37 is a major authority verse: Allah is Lord and Beneficent, and before Him no one has independent power to speak.

Major call-out (who gets to speak on Judgment Day): 78:37 crushes the “my imam will argue with Allah” mentality. Before Allah, no one has power to speak on their own authority. This destroys the religious marketing of guaranteed spokesmen, guaranteed courtroom wins, or “automatic intercession contracts.”

Verses 78:38–40

Angels in ranks; speaking only by permission and truth; the True Day; choice now; deeds revealed; regret

78:38The Day when the Spirit and the angels shall stand in ranks. They shall not speak except the one whom the Merciful permits, and who speaks what is right.

78:39That is the True Day. So whoever wills, let him take the path to his Lord.

78:40Indeed, We have warned you of the torment near (at hand), the Day when man will see all that his hands have sent forward, and the disbeliever will say: “Would that I were mere dust.”

Explanation

The scene is disciplined and terrifying: angels in ranks. No chaos. No shouting match. No “religious VIP” disorder.
Speech is restricted: only with Allah’s permission, and only truth is spoken (78:38). This rules out false pleas, fake excuses, and manipulative defense tactics.
78:39 calls it the “True Day”—meaning today’s illusions end. You still have will now, so use it to return to Allah.
78:40 is the final personal accountability hammer: you will see what your hands sent forward. Faith is not inherited. Salvation is not outsourced. The disbeliever’s regret is total.

Direct call-out (books besides Qur’an and “outsourcing religion”): 78:39–40 pushes you to take the path to Allah now, based on truth, and face what your hands earned. If a sheikh/imam tells you your safety is in “following our books/chain” while neglecting the Qur’an’s warnings and ethics, he is setting you up for the exact regret described in 78:40.

Surah 78 takeaway: The “Great News” is Judgment. Allah proves it through creation signs, then declares an appointed Day where rebels are trapped by a record and righteous are rewarded by account. On that Day, no one speaks except by Allah’s permission—and only truth is spoken. Your deeds are what you will see.
