Surah Al-Mujādilah (58:1–22)

Qur’an-only explanation (no hadith). This surah is extremely practical: it protects women from verbal oppression (ẓihār), establishes real repentance with real cost, exposes secret conspiracies and religious hypocrisy, and defines loyalty: believers cannot emotionally ally with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger.
Qur’an-only focus added: where applicable, this explanation calls out clerical cultures that weaponize religion through secret councils, intimidation, oath-games, and “guaranteed intercession,” or that elevate extra books and leaders above Allah’s clear limits.
What this surah is correcting
Family justice Accountability Anti-conspiracy Community etiquette Against hypocrisy Against religious gatekeeping
Verses 58:1–4
Allah hears the oppressed; invalidating ẓihār; repentance with concrete repair

1.Allah has heard the words of her who pleads with you about her husband and complains to Allah. Allah hears your dialogue. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

2.Those among you who declare ẓihār from their wives—(they should know) they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave them birth. They speak an evil word and a lie. Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.

3.Those who declare ẓihār then wish to go back on what they said must free a slave before the two touch each other. This is what you are instructed with. Allah is aware of what you do.

4.Whoever cannot find (a slave) must fast two consecutive months before the two touch each other. Whoever is unable must feed sixty needy. That is so you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. These are Allah’s limits; for disbelievers is a painful punishment.

Explanation

  • 58:1: Allah publicly validates the suffering woman: He hears her complaint. This destroys any culture where women are silenced “for the sake of reputation.”
  • 58:2: ẓihār is exposed as a lie: calling your wife “like my mother” (to harm her and suspend her life) does not create a new reality. Allah calls it an evil utterance.
  • 58:3–4: repentance is not merely words; it requires a costly remedy: freeing a slave, or two months fasting, or feeding sixty poor. The point is: misuse of power must be repaired with sacrifice.
  • 58:4: “These are Allah’s limits” means nobody—husband, elder, sheikh, imam—gets to rewrite family law by customs or intimidation.
Direct callout (58:1–4): Any imam/sheikh who protects abusive men using “private counseling” and tells women to be silent, or who treats cultural formulas as sacred law, is contradicting this surah’s opening. Allah Himself intervenes for the oppressed and sets limits that no cleric may bypass.
Verses 58:5–7
Opposing Allah and Messenger; records; Allah’s presence in secret meetings

5.Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be abased as those before were abased. We sent down clear signs; for disbelievers is a disgraceful punishment.

6.On the Day Allah resurrects them all, He will inform them of what they did. Allah has counted it while they forgot it. Allah is witness over all things.

7.Do you not see that Allah knows what is in the heavens and earth? No secret conversation of three but He is their fourth, nor of five but He is their sixth—nor less nor more—except He is with them wherever they may be. Then He will inform them on the Day of Resurrection. Allah is Knower of all things.

Explanation

  • 58:5: “clear signs” is the Qur’anic foundation. Opposition is not only open denial; it includes resisting the Messenger’s conveyed guidance by replacing it with factional agendas.
  • 58:6: people forget; Allah does not. This is a warning to anyone relying on “we’ll manage the story” or “we’ll bury the evidence.”
  • 58:7: Allah is present with every secret meeting. This dismantles conspiratorial religion and political whispering that thrives on secrecy.
Direct callout (58:7): Secret “shūrā rooms,” backroom religious committees, and hidden clerical councils that plan manipulation, character assassination, or cover-ups should fear this verse. Allah is with them in the meeting—He hears every strategy.
Verses 58:8–10
Forbidden whispering; disrespectful greetings; Satanic grief tactics; trust in Allah

8.Those forbidden from secret conversation returned to it. They whisper about sin, transgression, and disobedience to the Messenger. When they come to you, they greet you with what Allah did not greet you with, and they say to themselves: “Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?” Hell is sufficient for them—evil is the destination.

9.O believers: when you whisper, do not whisper about sin, transgression, and disobedience to the Messenger; whisper about righteousness and piety. Fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.

10.Secret conversation is from Satan to grieve believers; he cannot harm them except by Allah’s permission. In Allah let believers trust.

Explanation

  • 58:8: Allah exposes a pattern: people use private whispering to coordinate wrongdoing while maintaining a public religious face.
  • 58:8: “Why doesn’t Allah punish us?” shows arrogance: they mistake delayed punishment for approval.
  • 58:9: the solution is not banning private talk; it is changing its content: righteousness and God-consciousness.
  • 58:10: Satan uses whisper campaigns to create fear, confusion, and grief. The antidote is trust in Allah, not paranoia.
Direct callout (58:8–10): If religious leaders run whisper networks—private chats, hidden groups, coded messages—to push factional agendas, demonize Qur’an-focused believers, or enforce “obedience” to non-Qur’an books, this surah brands that culture as satanic grief-work.
Verses 58:11–13
Assembly etiquette; ranks of knowledge; disciplined private consultation with the Messenger

11.O believers: when told, “Make room in assemblies,” make room; Allah will make room for you. When told, “Rise,” then rise. Allah will raise those who believe and those granted knowledge in ranks. Allah is aware of what you do.

12.O believers: when you consult the Messenger privately, present charity before your consultation. That is better and purer. If you cannot, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

13.Are you afraid to present charity before private consultation? When you do not, and Allah has forgiven you: establish prayer, give the purifying charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah is aware of what you do.

Explanation

  • 58:11: Islam is not only belief; it is manners and social discipline. Making room is a sign of humility; Allah “makes room” for such people in mercy and provision.
  • 58:11: “those granted knowledge” are raised—but in the Qur’an, knowledge is tied to faith, ethics, and responsibility, not celebrity.
  • 58:12–13: private access to the Messenger is regulated to prevent elitism and time-wasting. Charity acts as a filter: only serious matters deserve private priority.
  • 58:12–13: if someone cannot pay, Allah forgives; the core remains: prayer, purification-giving, and obedience to Allah’s message.
Direct callout (58:11–13): This surah does not create a “priest class.” It regulates consultation so leadership is not exploited. Any sheikh culture that sells VIP access, private blessings, “special du‘ā packages,” or positions itself as the necessary gate to Allah is reversing the Qur’an’s direction: it commercializes what Allah disciplined.
Books & authority note (58:11): “Those granted knowledge” does not mean “those who memorized extra books and now can override the Qur’an.” Qur’anic knowledge elevates by bringing people closer to Allah’s limits and ethics—not by replacing the Qur’an with a parallel law.
Verses 58:14–19
False alliances; oath-shields; blocking Allah’s path; Satan’s party; self-deception on Judgment Day

14.Have you not seen those who befriend a people Allah is angry with? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to falsehood knowingly.

15.Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment—evil is what they do.

16.They take their oaths as a cover and hinder from Allah’s path; for them is a disgraceful punishment.

17.Their wealth and children will not avail them against Allah. They are companions of the Fire, abiding therein.

18.On the Day Allah resurrects them all, they will swear to Him as they swear to you, thinking they have something to stand on. Truly they are the liars.

19.Satan has overcome them and made them forget Allah’s remembrance. Those are Satan’s party—Satan’s party are the losers.

Explanation

  • 58:14: Allah exposes political-religious opportunists: they play both sides, seeking safety and advantage, not truth.
  • 58:16: oaths can be weaponized as “religious camouflage.” People hide behind swearing and slogans while blocking Allah’s path.
  • 58:17: worldly power cannot buy safety with Allah—family and money do not shield a person from accountability.
  • 58:18: the liar’s psychology continues into the next life—they still try to “talk their way out,” as if Allah can be managed like humans.
  • 58:19: Satan’s main victory is to make people forget Allah’s remembrance—forgetting leads to moral collapse while people still feel religious.
Direct callout (58:16–18): Watch for religious figures who use “I swear by Allah” and public piety as a shield while they block the Qur’an, shame sincere believers, or protect corruption. This surah describes them precisely: oaths as cover, hindering Allah’s path, and self-delusion that they “have something to stand on.”
Intercession illusion exposed (58:17): If wealth and children cannot protect you, then celebrity sheikhs and claimed “saints” cannot either. Any doctrine that sells guaranteed rescue through people is a false security—this surah says: nothing “avails” against Allah except truth and repentance.
Verses 58:20–22
Allah and messengers prevail; faith-based loyalty; party of Allah succeeds

20.Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be among the most humiliated.

21.Allah has decreed: “I and My Messengers will prevail.” Allah is Powerful, Mighty.

22.You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—even if they are fathers, sons, brothers, or kindred. Allah has written faith in their hearts and supported them with a spirit from Him. He will admit them to Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Those are Allah’s party—Allah’s party are the successful.

Explanation

  • 58:20–21: truth ultimately wins. “Prevail” does not mean every believer wins worldly politics; it means Allah’s message and justice are not defeated in the final account.
  • 58:22: faith has consequences in loyalty and love. You cannot emotionally celebrate what opposes Allah while claiming devotion to Allah.
  • 58:22: the verse targets loyalty conflicts: family and tribe cannot become excuses to support opposition to Allah’s guidance.
  • 58:22: Allah’s party is defined by faith written in hearts and divine support—not by sect branding.
Direct callout (58:22): This verse is a warning to any religious movement where loyalty to the sheikh, the group, or the inherited books becomes stronger than loyalty to Allah’s clear guidance. If a leader teaches “defend the sect even when it contradicts Qur’an,” that is loving what opposes the Messenger’s message. Allah’s party is not a brand—it is obedience to Allah.
