- Key word: Ikhlāṣ (sincerity) — worship aimed only at Allah, without bargaining or status games.
- Key warning: intercession belongs entirely to Allah; invented “helpers” cannot force Him.
- Key hope: “Do not despair of Allah’s mercy” is a direct command, not a slogan.
1.Revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.
2.We sent down the Book in truth, so worship Allah—sincere to Him in religion.
3.Pure religion belongs to Allah. Those who take protectors besides Him say: “We only worship them to bring us near to Allah.” Allah will judge what they differ in. Allah does not guide the liar, the ingrate.
4.If Allah had willed to take a son, He could choose what He willed from creation. Glory be to Him—He is Allah, One, All-Compelling.
5.He created the heavens and earth with truth; He wraps night over day and day over night; He subjected the sun and moon—each running to an appointed term. Is He not Mighty, Forgiving?
6.He created you from a single soul, then made its mate; He provided for you from cattle in pairs; He creates you in the wombs of your mothers—creation after creation—in three darknesses. That is Allah your Lord; sovereignty is His; no god but Him—so how are you turned away?
Explanation (Verses 1–6)
- 39:1–2 set authority and purpose: the Qur’an comes from Allah with truth, so the correct response is worship with ikhlāṣ—no “religious politics,” no divided loyalty.
- 39:3 exposes the main shirk excuse: “We only use them as a bridge.” The Qur’an rejects this logic because it turns worship into a tool for influence, not submission to truth. Allah alone decides judgment; invented mediators cannot override Him. “Liar/ingrate” means: you claim sincerity while practicing compromise, and you deny the Giver while clinging to rivals.
- 39:4 corrects “son” theology by pure logic: Allah is not constrained by need or lineage; He is One and irresistible in authority. The verse is not asking people to debate metaphysics—it is shutting down a claim that lowers Allah to creature categories.
- 39:5 uses cosmic order as proof of purposeful governance: alternation of night/day and the disciplined motion of sun/moon indicate control, time limits, and accountability. Mentioning “Forgiving” with “Mighty” balances fear and hope.
- 39:6 moves from cosmos to self: human origin (one soul), provision (livestock), and hidden development (womb stages) demonstrate Allah’s intimate creation and ownership—so turning away is irrational.
7.If you disbelieve, Allah is free of need of you. He does not approve disbelief for His servants; if you are grateful, He is pleased for you. No soul bears another’s burden. To your Lord is return; He will inform you what you did—He knows what is in hearts.
8.When harm touches man, he calls on his Lord, turning to Him; then when Allah gives a favor, he forgets what he called for and sets up rivals to mislead. Say: “Enjoy disbelief a little—you are companions of Fire.”
9.Is the one devoted at night—prostrating and standing—fearing the Hereafter and hoping for mercy (like the one who denies)? Say: “Are those who know equal to those who do not?” Only people of understanding take heed.
10.Say: “O My believing servants, be mindful of your Lord. For those who do good, there is good in this world; Allah’s earth is spacious. The patient will be paid in full without measure.”
11.Say: “I am commanded to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion,”
12.“and I am commanded to be first of those who surrender.”
Explanation (Verses 7–12)
- 39:7 teaches two truths at once: Allah does not need anyone, yet He cares about what benefits His servants. “No soul bears another’s burden” destroys the idea that a “holy person” can carry your guilt while you continue knowingly.
- 39:8 diagnoses a common hypocrisy: in crisis people pray purely, but in comfort they rewrite the story—crediting themselves, idols, or “connections.” The warning “enjoy a little” is not permission; it is exposing how short this life is.
- 39:9 contrasts real knowledge with ignorance: knowledge here is not data; it is awareness that changes behavior—especially night devotion when no one is watching. It asks: can that be equal to arrogance and denial? The answer is no.
- 39:10 gives practical direction: do good; if oppressed or trapped, “Allah’s earth is spacious” means you are not forced to remain in a place that crushes your faith. Patience is rewarded beyond normal accounting.
- 39:11–12 set the messenger as a living proof: sincerity first, surrender first—so the message is not theory.
13.Say: “I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
14.Say: “Allah alone I worship—sincere to Him in my religion.”
15.“So worship whatever you wish besides Him.” Say: “The losers are those who lose themselves and their families on Resurrection Day—this is the clear loss.”
16.For them are coverings of Fire above them and below them. With that Allah warns His servants: “O My servants, be mindful of Me.”
17.Those who avoid false gods from worshipping them and turn to Allah—there are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants,
18.who listen to the word and follow the best of it—those are guided; those have understanding.
19.Is one on whom the decree of punishment is justified (to be guided)? Can you rescue one in Fire?
20.But those mindful of their Lord have lofty chambers above chambers with rivers beneath—Allah’s promise; Allah does not break promise.
Explanation (Verses 13–20)
- 39:13–14 show the messenger’s posture: fear of accountability + pure worship. This is the exact opposite of religious showmanship.
- 39:15 is a challenge: if you insist, choose what you will—but know what it costs. “Lose themselves and families” means losing the entire future of the soul and the relationships that matter most.
- 39:16 emphasizes total enclosure: Fire above and below—no escape routes. The warning is mercy because it is given before arrival.
- 39:17–18 define the guided: they refuse false worship, repent, and have a disciplined method—listen, then follow what is best. This rejects blind imitation and emotional religion.
- 39:19 states a hard reality: when someone repeatedly hardens themselves, guidance is not forced on them. The messenger cannot “save” by power; he conveys.
- 39:20 balances fear with hope: the mindful receive elevated dwellings and flowing rivers—security and honor—because Allah’s promise is reliable.
21.Allah sends down water, channels it as springs, produces crops of varying colors; then they wither, yellow, and become chaff—surely a reminder for understanding.
22.Is one whose chest Allah opened to Islam—on light from his Lord—like one hardened? Woe to hearts hardened against Allah’s remembrance—clear error.
23.Allah sent down the best statement: a Book consistent, repeating. Skins shiver of those who fear their Lord; then skins and hearts soften to Allah’s remembrance. That is Allah’s guidance; whom Allah misguides has no guide.
24.Is one who faces the worst punishment with his face on Resurrection Day (like one protected)? It will be said to wrongdoers: “Taste what you earned.”
25.Those before them denied; punishment came from where they did not perceive.
26.Allah made them taste humiliation in this world; the Hereafter punishment is greater—if only they knew.
27.We gave people in this Qur’an every kind of parable so they may remember.
28.An Arabic Qur’an without crookedness—so they may be mindful.
29.Allah gives a parable: a man owned by many quarrelling partners versus a man owned by one master—are they equal? Praise be to Allah, but most do not know.
Explanation (Verses 21–29)
- 39:21 uses agriculture to teach humility and urgency: life flourishes, then fades. If you understand this cycle, you stop living like you will never answer for your choices.
- 39:22 defines guidance as an inner opening: Islam is “light” when the heart is opened; the opposite is hardness—resistance to remembrance.
- 39:23 describes the Qur’an’s psychological reality: it awakens fear (shivering) then produces calm surrender (softening). The repetition is not boredom; it is training—truth must return until it reshapes you.
- 39:24 is a terrifying image: the face is the most defended part of the body—yet the condemned has no defense. “Taste what you earned” states moral causality: consequences match choices.
- 39:25–26 warn that punishment can arrive unexpectedly, and humiliation can begin in this world; the Hereafter is far more severe.
- 39:27–28 explain why parables exist: to push memory and reflection. “Arabic without crookedness” means clarity and straightness in the message.
- 39:29 destroys shirk with a practical example: serving many quarrelling “masters” is confusion and stress; serving one master is clarity and stability. Spiritually, multiple “gods” fracture the soul; tawhid unifies it.
30.You will die, and they will die.
31.Then on Resurrection Day you will dispute before your Lord.
32.Who is more unjust than one who lies against Allah and denies truth when it comes? Is not Hell the home for disbelievers?
33.He who brought the truth and confirmed it—those are the righteous.
34.They will have whatever they desire with their Lord—reward of doers of good.
35.Allah will remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them by the best of what they used to do.
36.Is Allah not sufficient for His servant? They frighten you with others besides Him. Whom Allah leaves astray has no guide.
37.Whom Allah guides, none can mislead. Is Allah not Mighty, Owner of retribution?
38.If you ask: “Who created heavens and earth?” they say: “Allah.” Say: “If Allah intends harm or mercy for me, can what you call besides Allah remove harm or block mercy?” Say: “Allah is sufficient; on Him the trusting rely.”
39.Say: “O my people, work according to your position; I too am working. Soon you will know,”
40.“who receives humiliating punishment and on whom lasting punishment descends.”
41.We sent down the Book for mankind in truth; whoever is guided, it is for his soul; whoever goes astray, it is against himself; you are not a guardian over them.
Explanation (Verses 30–41)
- 39:30–31 level all status: even the messenger dies. The dispute before Allah means all arguments and excuses end at the One who knows reality.
- 39:32 identifies the greatest injustice: lying about Allah (inventing claims in His name) and rejecting truth after it arrives.
- 39:33–35 highlight salvation: bringing truth (revelation) and confirming it (living by it). Allah’s mercy appears in how He cleanses the record—removing worst and rewarding by the best.
- 39:36–38 dismantle fear tactics: people try to intimidate the messenger with “other gods,” but Allah is sufficient. Even idolaters admit Allah as Creator; the Qur’an forces consistency: if Allah alone controls harm/mercy, then worship must be for Him alone.
- 39:39–40 state the final separation: each side continues; the outcome will prove who was truthful.
- 39:41 establishes responsibility: guidance benefits the self; misguidance harms the self. The messenger is not a controller—only a conveyor.
42.Allah takes souls at death and those not dead in sleep; He keeps those decreed to die and sends others back for a term—signs for people who reflect.
43.Or have they taken besides Allah intercessors? Say: “Even if they possess no power and no understanding?”
44.Say: “All intercession belongs to Allah. His is the dominion of the heavens and earth; to Him you return.”
45.When Allah alone is mentioned, hearts of those who deny the Hereafter feel disgust; when others besides Him are mentioned, they rejoice.
46.Say: “O Allah, Creator of heavens and earth, Knower of unseen and seen—You will judge between Your servants in what they differed.”
47.If wrongdoers had all on earth and the like, they would ransom with it from worst punishment—but will face from Allah what they did not expect.
48.The evils they earned will appear; what they mocked will surround them.
49.When hardship touches man, he calls Us; when We give favor, he says: “I was given it due to knowledge.” No—it is a trial, but most do not know.
50.Those before them said the same; what they earned did not benefit them.
51.Evils of what they earned overtook them; likewise wrongdoers among these will be overtaken and cannot escape.
52.Do they not know Allah expands provision for whom He wills and restricts? In that are signs for believers.
Explanation (Verses 42–52)
- 39:42 uses sleep as a daily “mini-death” sign: your soul is taken and returned by Allah’s permission—proof that resurrection is not strange. If Allah can “return” you every morning, He can return you after death.
- 39:43–44 destroy the intercession myth: if an intercessor has no power or understanding, claiming them is irrational. Intercession is entirely Allah’s property—He authorizes whatever He wills; no one owns leverage over Him.
- 39:45 gives a diagnostic test: do you feel discomfort when Allah alone is mentioned? That reveals the heart’s attachment to partners.
- 39:46 models the correct prayer: ask Allah to judge fairly; do not pretend you can manipulate truth with tribal religion.
- 39:47–48 show regret at its peak: even infinite wealth cannot buy exit. The mocked warnings become surrounding reality.
- 39:49–51 criticize the arrogance of “I earned it by my knowledge.” The Qur’an says success can be a test; failing the test turns blessing into evidence against you.
- 39:52 corrects the economics of ego: provision expands and contracts by Allah’s wisdom—so gratitude and humility are required, not self-worship.
53.Say: “O My servants who transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Allah forgives all sins. He is Forgiving, Merciful.”
54.“Return to your Lord and surrender to Him before punishment comes—then you will not be helped.”
55.“Follow the best of what is sent down to you from your Lord before punishment comes suddenly while you do not perceive.”
56.Lest a soul says: “Woe to me for neglecting Allah; I was among the mockers.”
57.Or: “If Allah guided me, I would be righteous.”
58.Or, when seeing punishment: “If only I had another chance, I would do good.”
59.Yes—My revelations came; you denied, were arrogant, and were disbelievers.
60.On Resurrection Day you will see those who lied against Allah—faces darkened. Is there not in Hell an abode for the arrogant?
61.Allah will save those mindful to their success—no evil touches them; no grief.
62.Allah is Creator of all things and Guardian over all things.
63.To Him belong the keys of the heavens and earth. Those who disbelieve in Allah’s revelations are the losers.
Explanation (Verses 53–63)
- 39:53 is one of the strongest doors of hope in the Qur’an: even repeated sin does not justify despair. But it is addressed to “My servants,” meaning: you must still turn to Allah, not demand forgiveness while staying proud.
- 39:54–55 balance hope with urgency: repent and surrender before consequences arrive; “follow the best” means obey what is strongest and clearest in guidance, not what suits desires.
- 39:56–58 list the excuses people will try: regret, blaming destiny, begging for a redo. The Qur’an dismantles them as late excuses, because the message already came.
- 39:59 gives the real cause: denial + arrogance. The issue was not lack of information; it was refusal to submit.
- 39:60–61 show two faces: darkness for liars (public exposure of inner corruption) and security for the mindful.
- 39:62–63 conclude logically: if Allah created and guards all, and holds the “keys” (absolute control), then attaching worship to others is guaranteed loss.
64.Say: “Do you order me to worship other than Allah, O ignorant ones?”
65.It was revealed to you and those before you: if you associate partners, your deeds become void and you become among the losers.
66.Rather worship Allah and be among the grateful.
67.They did not appraise Allah with true appraisal. On Resurrection Day the whole earth will be in His grasp and the heavens folded in His right—glory to Him above partners.
68.The trumpet is blown: all in heavens and earth fall dead except whom Allah wills; then blown again and they stand looking on.
69.The earth shines with its Lord’s light; the Book is set; prophets and witnesses are brought; judgment is with truth; none wronged.
70.Every soul is paid in full for what it did—Allah knows best what they do.
71.Disbelievers are driven to Hell in groups; when they reach it, gates open; keepers ask: “Did messengers not come, reciting revelations and warning of this Day?” They say: “Yes,” but the word of punishment is justified.
72.It is said: “Enter the gates of Hell to remain.” Evil is the abode of the arrogant.
73.Those mindful are led to Paradise in groups; when they reach it, its gates open; keepers say: “Peace be on you—you did well—enter to remain.”
74.They say: “Praise to Allah who fulfilled His promise and made us inherit the land; we settle in the Garden as we wish.” Excellent is the reward of workers.
75.You will see angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying their Lord; judgment is done with truth; it is said: “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
Explanation (Verses 64–75)
- 39:64 rejects “compromise worship.” The Qur’an labels it ignorance because it contradicts the Creator/Owner logic established earlier.
- 39:65 states the most severe spiritual law: shirk nullifies deeds. Why? Because you cannot build “good” on a foundation of betrayal of the One who owns worship.
- 39:66 gives the alternative: worship Allah alone and live gratitude—gratitude is the moral response to provision and guidance.
- 39:67 explains why people fall into shirk: they underestimate Allah. The imagery “earth in His grasp” and “heavens folded” teaches absolute sovereignty and the smallness of creation before Him.
- 39:68 describes the cosmic reset: the first blast ends worldly life; the second begins resurrection. The point is certainty and power, not curiosity.
- 39:69–70 show the courtroom of reality: the record is set; prophets and witnesses appear; judgment is perfectly just; full repayment is given.
- 39:71–72 show Hell “in groups”: people arrive with their communities of choice (shared values, shared denial). The gatekeepers’ question removes excuses: messengers warned you.
- 39:73–74 show Paradise “in groups”: believers arrive with companionship of faith. “Peace” and “you did well” show acceptance; “inherit the land” indicates stable ownership without loss.
- 39:75 ends with the ultimate atmosphere: angels glorify Allah; the final statement is pure praise—because justice has been completed and truth has fully appeared.
